The records consist chiefly of the letters of the Bishop of Auckland and the early missionaries to Cardinal Vaughan and the Father Superior at Mill Hill, giving a detailed account of the growth and problems of the Mission in its first twenty years.

St. Joseph's College at Mill Hill was founded in 1866 by Herbert Vaughan. In 1886, it established a Maori Mission within the Diocese of Auckland which has continued to the present day.
